The Left Outsides

The Left Outsides seamlessly mix their love of the whimsical, English psychedelia of Syd Barrett, with the icy and ethereal european folk of Nico, the drones of Ben Chasney’s Six Organs of Admittance and the introspection of Elliot Smith, all done in a subtle, understated way. Their music evokes that nether-world between wakefulness and sleep.

Formed in 2007, from the ashes of new psychedelic folkers 'The Eighteenth Day of May' (Rykodisc), the Left Outsides are Mark Nicholas and Alison Cotton, a duo from London, England. Following a string of self released, limited edition lo-fi CDR albums recorded by the duo in their home studio, they released their debut album 'And Colours in Between' on the Oxford based Transistor label in 2008. A 7" single 'The Third Light' followed, released by Hi-Beat records in 2009.

A trip to a 'proper' studio resulted in a new album 'The Shape of Things to Come' mixed by Martin Noble (British Sea Power) and Graham Sutton (Bark Psychosis). Their sound has expanded and a more textured psychedelic set of songs has emerged. But with it, the introspective hypnotic folk with an unnerving edge remains.

Mark previously served in 'acid expressionists' of Arrowe Hill and Alison's considerable viola skills have been put to good use in numerous British bands including Saloon and Mathew Sawyer and the Ghosts.
“folky, dreamy, psychedelia....... quintessentially English and pastoral....”
